361 - 18.10.26 - Sanity

I went for a run today - sanity once more. I just have to run daily, there's all there is to it. And since I can't do it outside, I'll have to do it indoors.

So I also cleared up the living room. And I'll do the table soon. I've decided to stop commenting on the haze. It's pointless. It's also too late now. Too late. Rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic and hoping for the best. I can't be bothered anymore. I've done my bit, literally. And no one wanted to listen. Maybe I should have done more. Like Naomi Klein's son said, did you do enough to stop Trump? Did I do enough to stop the destruction of the rainforest?

Well, I was thinking while running today, what could have been done.

The three countries - Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore - could have set up a Rainforest Action Plan. This would have had three aims.

1. To stop deforestation by transitioning to an economy which does not rely on the destruction of the remaining habitat.

2. To make it possible for indigenous people to earn and income from sustainable tourism

3. To restore the rainforest

You would have set up an ombudsman which would have been funded by the three governments with real power, including airplanes, on the ground enforcement and severe penalties for any organisation which violated these.

You would have established an education and sustainable development plan for indigenous peoples to develop best practise based on traditional methods of cultivation with assistance from modern technology. There would also be management of river basins, etc.

You would have developed a reafforestation programme which looked at stitching back together the remaining primary rainforests with recovering secondary rainforests.

AND honestly, the ideas were already there, I read my Harapan blog and the ideas were already there. Now we have the rearranging of the N95 masks on the Titanic. Everything is too late now because people are stupid and greedy. So I have nothing left to say about it anymore. I'm just gonna do my own thing now. I'm totally fed up with people. I have my own family to look after.

Well, it's 4 pm now. I'm gonna think about things and tidy my desk up. Then I'm going to do some gardening. The haze seems to have settled a bit. There was some blue sky. No rain though. But it feels like it might have rained elsewhere in Singapore. Right.

I have to run everyday - there is no choice in the matter, there's all there is to it. It keeps me sane. First thing in the morning. Like around 6 am. I get up at 4.30 am and write/ blog. Whatever, but 6 am, out the door go running. And then swim. It is the only way to stay sane in this place. And then lots and lots of creativity while I do the important work of looking after Ma.
