Happy birthday Pa, love from St Andrews!

Image
St Andrews for his 71st birthday Local products On the way to St Andrews is this farm shop called Balgrove. It does a roaring trade with the St Andrews crowd. The produce is good and it is reasonable. It has great atmos and Both very young children and very old children love it. We picked up amongst other things, packets of smoked salmon trimmings for only £1.95 per pack and they were big packs, and we also had lunch at their steak barn... This is what Pa looks like most of the time The Steak Barn was very nice and the steak was properly cooked, but the meat was not as nice as the Dexters that Alan sells. I suspect nothing will be as nice as the Dexters that Alan sells. I have stopped eating red meat because of my diet and because of the small matter of inflammation in my joints whenever i do - but i did have a go at it this time because it was so sunny and it was with Ma and Pa. Ma contemplates the menu This is the much beleaguered bridge - St something - swith...

Soul and soil, plant and planet

Image
The Voynich manuscript I am slowly taking down notes of the Agri lectures and thinking about them over night. And through the day and trying to draw connections which what is conveyed in them. Somethings already make sense to me. Such as the soil and the different qualities in it. Other things, i am keeping an open mind. I am generally brought round to the important of the cosmos to the Earth. That is very clear. That what is above us has an effect on our soil and plants is clear. The soil is not the source of nutrition for the plant life on it. The soil is the conductor of those planetary forces and what is in the soil is the conductor for it. The planets radiate down on us - the outer planets into the soil and the inner planet into the atmosphere. The soil helps to bring these forces to the plants. Our task as gardeners is to understand how the soil does this and help it to do it in such a way that it does not trash the soil. In the light of this, if this is true, the abuse w...

Digging for victory

Image
Blue bin chic I am a Digging Goddess. I was not always a digging goddess. I was actually quite useless. In fact i had no upper body strength. I still don't not really. However, over the past few months i have had the opportunity to develop my digging technique and today it finally came into its own when i dug in the paving slabs that will be the base of the centre of the garden for our garden chairs. What i found out about the lawn when i dug it. It is completely compacted. I was able to jump on the spade, and go right in, slicing it like a cake, but when i turned the sod up, anything two inches below the soil was completely airless. Which made me think about the sheet mulching. I don't have any conclusion yet, but i will think about it. When we were in Ballybay, we had the chance to look at some soil in cross section and we saw it was very compacted too. If you keep using the prep will the roots be able to get into the rest of the soil? Will it change? Become more fille...

When a man loves a woman

Image
The Alchemycal Wedding Let me see, for how LONG have we had universal education? At least three generations right? If not four. It would therefore make sense that at the very LEAST the idea of the sacred marriage is not about a man marrying a woman, but about the balance between male and female principle. You would think that by now, the undergraduate discussions in the many many university courses which read about myth and fairy tales would have percolated into society in general and by now there would be an understanding that the prince marries the princess is NOT LITERAL. Sorry feminists who get very upset about the lack of the strong mother in the story. Because the way it goes is that within of us is the King, the Stepmother, the Princess to be rescued and the Prince who does the rescuing. That happily ever after does not refer to people who have gotten married and have never had another fight and lived in a self-cleaning house with no money worries bears no relationsh...

Oh my goodness, doesn't Newcastle look fantastic!

Image
Yes that is ACTUAL sun My dad LOVES the golf. So it is ironic that a few days after i book us a trip to St Andrews, we discover that the VERY SAME WEEKEND, the Irish Open is being held in Newcastle. He was devastated, but being my dad, he does not like to show his devastation. So instead, i suggested we visited Newcastle before the Open took place and we ended up holing up in the Slieve Donnard. Which is not a bad place to be holed up at all. We did not plan to stay, but when we got there my dad was so carried away with all the photographs of Rory McIlroy that we checked into the hotel. No luggage, no toothbrushes, nothing. But it was GREAT fun. This is the view from the room - we did not get the seaview, but the course view, which was far better, of course. Here we see everyone getting ready for the open It has been a long long time since i had been at something like this. I think the closest i have gotten in recent years was possibly the Balmoral Show. Yes, i know. But in t...

People Like Us

Image
My music station When i was in Singapore nearly twenty years ago, i was asked if i would be board member of PLU - or People Like Us. Which was an underground organisation, which meant that i was not really a board member. BUT what was interesting about it was that its underground aim was to campaign for equality for LGBT people in Singapore, which still has not happened yet, incidentally. Singapore - or indeed Asia - is a very strange place in that people who are gay or transgender are generally accepted in society. It is an open secret that many of our cultural icons, artists and indeed politicians are gay. That's OK. Many civil servants are gay. That's ok. But we inherited this weird law from Victorian times which says that all sex which does not lead to vaginal penetration is illegal. So lesbianism is not illegal, but being gay is. So i joined PLU. The only straight woman on their underground committee. I did not stay long because i left for Ireland shortly. Which is...

Doing our own thing

Recently i was shocked by the horrible state of the world. I mean i have known for a very long time the horribleness of the state of it, but it was sort of brought home by the elections and then by the depressing knowledge that despite all the evidence with regards to the destructive poisonous nature of money with no meaning, the world is entranced by it. It fuels armed conflict, it fuels exploitation, it fuels inequality. Worse still, it makes people who do not have it think that they are deprived. It makes people who do not have it think, that somehow they are lesser than billionaires and the super rich. Which means that it affects A LOT of people. Cos, really that ain't most of us, the billionaires and the super rich. However, my response to this has been to just do our own thing. I have decided to just concentrate on the children and the space in the school. Do what i can there, do what i can to make it a better place for people who are looking for something else. Peop...
