350 - 9.10.26 - Asking for it

So, let me get this straight. It has taken us three generations - the Boomers, Gen X and the Millennials - roughly between 1960 to now - to completely fuck up the planet... that's right isn't it?

From about when Rachael Carson wrote Silent Spring to now - when entire rainforests are on fire. Greenpeace was founded in 1972. The Earth Summit was first held in 1982. We have had give or take 60 years to get things right and... did we? Could we have turned back the clock at any stage and done something about it? Yes, yes we could have. If these fucking morons had listened to us, they would have said, actually this is stupid - we have to stop killing ourselves. Even as late as 1997, the Kyoto Protocol was signed, and then in 2020, we had the pandemic and the world shut down. We have had many many opportunities to stop, think and do something about the wrong path that we took, and we just said, these people are pesky little fear mongerers. They don't know what they are talking about, when in actual fact, what we were talking about was torching the entirety of the house... the analogy could be, I suppose, imagine you lived in a very grand palace. With excellent grounds. And one day, because you believed that your room in the house should be the most finely decorated and served, you begin to go around robbing the rooms of other members of your family. These people who put up a fight, you shout louder than them. Maybe you invite some of the people in the other rooms to come and live in yours. Share some of the spoils. The other people they can just put up with the shite that they have. Its too bad who asked them to be so useless at fighting? Then you say, actually, you know what, we can also take the grounds and start chopping down the trees in the, to sell off to other houses. It's fine. It's only the grounds. Everyone will be happy inside the fancy house. People who say this is a bad idea don't know what they are talking about.

It does seem hard to believe that these assholes have now condemned us to live in a place and a planet which is totally sucky.

Finally the entirety of the grounds are razed and there are actually stupid people who believe that they can continue doing this and the smoke from the fires now blankets the entirety of the castle and everyone is fucked. Everyone. Is. Fucked.

I wrote this in my FB post:

It has taken us only three generations to completely fuck the planet and ourselves up. Are the people in governance in Singapore understanding this - that their policies have directly contributed to the ecological disaster are breathing in everyday now. I have always found that the most reprehensible thing about Singapore was how it used to be held up as some kind of shining example of what you can do with some authoritarianism. We then went on to inspire other countries emerging from the ruins of colonialism and the ex colonialists themselves.

Now, look at us. A failing local population, prices which are increasing by the week, pollution from a dying rainforest... if only someone would have spoken up about the mess we are in - oh wait - they did. And the response? You are exaggerating. Don't be stupid, forests are not productive land.

Well, happy now are we with all of our production? We have produced ourselves off a cliff. The fact of the matter is that these stupid people relied on the rains to clean up the mess, but guess what, the rains are not due till December. Literally. There is going to be very very little rain until December. Not only that, temperatures are said to rise until February 2027, according to the UN. Well, if you didn't like the last two months, I have news for you. There's more where that came from. And people had 10 years to fix this - to mend the roof in good weather. And the messed it up. Well done boys.

Yes, so we have been asking for it for the last 60 years. Somewhere, elsewhere, there is a place where the air is clear and free. Soon the elite will leave Singapore cos who can live in this mess? The migrants will return because who wants to work in this mess? And the only people who will be left are those which cannot go anywhere.

Does the Singaporean government understand this? Distracted by the shiny thing. I hope this is a wake up call for them. They will say, business cannot be as usual. We have totally fucked it up. We need to do something about it.

---------------------------------

OK, I am no longer going to start the day in this state. But Singapore just does this to me. That's enough now. I cannot continue to function in this state of fury. Especially since there is nothing I can do. Weird, it looks like rain today. But often this disappears. I should not expect rain for the next two months at the very least.
