Saved the truffles

I saved the truffles by putting in some double cream. I have now come to the conclusion there is no situation in the world that double clream cannot rectify. Awful soup. Put some double cream. Miserable boyfriend. Have some double cream and chocolate pudding. Middle East problems. Double cream. Anyway, i put in some double cream, whisking furiously all the time. This seemed to do the trick. I hope the ganache will be set enough to roll out tomorrow into the most DELICIOUS chocolate truffles of all time.

I so do miss running. I can't wait when Peter gets back to be off again.

Must go now. The house is a bombsite an account of me not cleaning up after Ghin for less than a morning. I am really tired of cleaning up. I have never been so tired of cleaning up in all my life.

Today i also gave a talk about Singapore to the Steiner school. It got me thinking about my remarks on multiculturalism and how there were too many foreigners in Singapore. The fact is that there have always been too many foreigners in Singapore - i think. From the 14th century and even beyond Singapore and the islands around South East Asia have been subject to numerous waves of influences, confluences and arrivals - and departures. The Majapahit empire, followed by the Malacca Sultanate, the Chinese, the Indians, the Arabs, the Portugese, Spanish, Dutch, English, Americans, etc, etc. It is simply another wave in a long line of waves. And it's the same for this part of the world as well. The Formorians were suceeded by the Fir Bolgs who were then suceeded by the Da Dananns and finally the Milesians, who say they came from a crystal tower, but i strongly suspect actually originated from Iberia. Life is about miscegination. It's how we keep things interesting and mixed up. The trick is to do it slowly, incorporating it gently, mixing things so that, like a good mayonnaise it doesn't split but becomes all delicious and gooey in the mix. And that the eggs retain their egginess and the oil retains its oiliness. Life is about the mix. About everyone playing a positive part - not making a mess of things - like the way my truffle fell to bits. So it isn't about cultural purity - or any kind of purity. It's about living and let living. The happinest people are those who are able to stay happy while all this is going on. Those who embrace it, not become Grumpy and Miserable. Which is why the current Tory line that migrants take up hospital beds and contribute nothing to the economy is really alarming. If we were to take this line, we should ask the English for all our assets back, with interest. And the Elgin marbles and most of the British Museum should be returned from, whence they all came. And where would this leave us then? Will that return us to a pristine state of the way things were?

No, of course not. Things are always changing. Nothing stays the same. Even the rare breed apple tree that makes no movement in the backyard is growing... it really is pointless to wish for a past that never was. The thing is that we can only affect the future. We can bring down totalitarian regimes, take down empires of cruelty, we can shine in places that are dark, we can bring life where there is death, and where there is death we can learn peace. And the cycle continues. So i take back what i said about foreigners and Singapore. There should be foreigners there. It's just that things should be managed better. That's all.
