Everything changes
It is the summer holidays. Which means that i have a lot to do before i leave for Singapore. Which is why am i procrastinating big time, obviously, by blogging. I got up at 7 am this morning, made by eggs and coffee, watched The Syndicate, and then watch the woodpigeons drink and bathe from the pond, then pick off the insects thereafter aroundsunshine later the garden. It is a peaceful, tranquil existence and maybe even, there will be sunshine later today, although since it has been a full moon, it is likely to rain for a bit now.
It has been really quite interesting observing the news now. Things that happen on the news seem so far away from us. They don't really seem to affect us. Terrorism - well, we have been doing that in Northern Ireland now for a good few years. In fact, we don't have terrorism anymore. As the rest of the world explodes into massacres and vendettas, the people of Northern Ireland, by and large know what a useless course of action all that is, and are, for now, resolved to get along. There is the Greek meltdown and all it signifies. We are about to go through something similar here as the Treasury tightens. Sometimes i wish politicians will just call money's bluff. Sometimes, i wish they will sit down and ask themselves what is really important. What is really important is that we lead lives filled with meaning and peace. Is that not what all this is about? What is the point of wearing a £250,000 watch with you are encased in fear? If you live in a gated community and are always afraid that someone is going to either through envy or desperation take it all off you? Is it not much better to live the existence of the child where you believe that the world is good and that you want to do good too?
And then there is the last gasp of big everything. Agri, pharma, money - it is the last gasp because they are unsustainable. These institutions have run their course. It is clear now. It is especially clear in things which really matter - like food and health. The people who work in these areas are now saying, this is wrong. It is wrong to keep hammering the planet so that you can waste food in the supermarket. They are saying it is wrong to keep pumping us with drugs in order to have a false idea of what health care is supposed to mean.
I thought that education was supposed to be about making ourselves independent, being able to help us make choices. I wonder why, after i was educated to such a high level was i then asked to take everything i had and then sell myself for money to organisations whose interest was not the interest of the planet as a whole, but to the careers and bank accounts of individuals. And then to be offered the chance to become like them, if only i would turn into a monster as well.
That to me sounds incredibly moronic. Status, excessive wealth, excess, power - all that has never had any attraction for me - and it still does not. All these things are slowly beginning to unravel themselves - and it would be good if politicians, if people who have put themselves in charge were able to understand this is happening and say we are going to manage this change in a sensible way. The unraveling is happening for two reasons - firstly, we have reached our ecological limits. And secondly, we have exploited people so much that we are now reaping the whirlwind. If we do not share voluntarily soon, we will be made to share at the point of a knife.
I for one do not want it to come to this. So we must stop adopting a model of competition - stop believing in the doctrine of competition and start reclaiming the far more intelligent model of sharing. Do parents compete with their children? Do we compete with our lovers? Do we compete with the plants or animals when we are looking after them? No, absolutely not. We do the opposite in fact. We give them love and care and we are totally generous with them. Competition is a false idol which we have raised in order to justify the cruelty which we have imposed upon our fellowman. It has come from a time which is very dark in our history. Social Dawinism was used to scientifically used to justify segregation in the 1900s and thereafter it was used to justify the behaviours which fueled the boom and bust of that era - and it has been so ever thus. We need to call it for what it was - an aberration in the history of thought. An aberration in the history of humanity. We have learnt from our mistakes and we must now move on.
Because if we do not, we will be left in a world which none of us wants to inhabit. So this is what i work for. Laying the foundations, literally, for this new way of doing things. Where we are not infantalised. Not treated as children. Where, with patience and trust, we slowly build a world which is based on respect, dignity, acceptance and love. Where we are able to be safe with each other. The old world is passing. I rejoice in the lessons it has taught us, but we must let it go. We can no longer think that it is alright to make someone else suffer for the greater good. Where it is acceptable to think of people in terms of digits and numbers. In terms of GDP and strategies. No more. The new world is the one which we must want for not just own own children, but the children of our friends and the children of our enemies.
I have moved into the garden and it is filled with insect life. Bees and beetles and other flying things. Steiner said that the air sprites rode on the wakes in the air made by insects. I think this is partly why a garden buzzing with life is so full of tranquility. I was going to do up my classroom today but instead i think i shall just work at home and do the reports from here. With the air sprites. Whether there really are air sprites or it is just a pleasant story, or if it is something in between, it does not deny the reality that being in a garden in the summer is a magical, exquisite experience.
I am going to so miss this garden.
